The SSL Alpha-link MADI-SX, MADI-AX, MADI-TX, AX, Alpha-Link MX 16-4 and MX 4-16, OptiCoax, Delta-Link, MadiXtreme, MX4, and MADI-X8 require multimode fibre cables with SC connectors.
The SDI-MADI Link requires multimode fibre cables with ST connectors.
The Optical transceiver in these devices is optimized for use with 50/125 µm and 62,5/125 µm multimode fibre cable.
This means that both types of cable can be used (even where one of our user manuals may only mention one type), but we generally recommend the 62.5/125um multimode fibre cable (also referred to as the OM1 Fibre cable type), because:
- It is cheaper than the 50/125 µm (OM2)
- It allows for longer distances
- It is more popular
- To a lesser degree, because it avoids confusion with a more recently defined cable specification for Gigabit Ethernet, the 50/125 µm 850nm Laser-optimized cable (TIA-492AAAC, OM3). Note that this cable however is also compatible.
In most cases you will want to use duplex cables, where a cable is made of two conductors to connect one MADI input and one MADI output at either end.
Note that these cables are not specific to MADI, and are not always sold by pro audio/music stores but may just as easily be purchased from some electronics retailers.
